Fear is defined as an automatic fight-or-flight response to real or perceived threats, whereas anxiety is described as a future-oriented state that involves complex cognitive, emotional, physiological, and behavioral responses in anticipation of events or conditions perceived as threatening. Preoperative anxiety, in particular, significantly impacts the course of surgery and the postoperative recovery process. Untreated anxiety can have numerous negative effects, including delayed wound healing, increased postoperative pain, and decreased quality of life. There are both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions available for the treatment of preoperative anxiety. Due to the adverse side effects and potential interactions with anesthetic drugs associated with the administration of sedative and anxiolytic medications, there has been a growing interest in recent years in non-pharmacological interventions such as music therapy, aromatherapy, and acupuncture. According to recent research and systematic reviews, these interventions have been shown to be effective in reducing preoperative anxiety and offer potential benefits in improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.
